Praia de Alvor: A Beach Lover’s Paradise in Portugal

Praia de Alvor is a large open beach along the Atlantic coastline stretching several kilometers. Soft, fine white sand beneath the feet and in between your toes makes one see why this beach is loved by so many: residents and tourists alike. However, the beach is well visited during the peak summer months; the fact that it is so large means that you always have plenty of empty areas to enjoy. But again, whether you are looking for a good party area or a quiet corner, the lie of the beach means that you can typically have your favorite spot.

The lagoon’s waters are so calm, making it a haven for both amateurs and real adventurers. For those who feel that a slower pace is in order, picture yourself taking in the mind-boggling views, watching all those lovely birds getting taken in on that beautiful beach.

Alvor Boardwalk

This is for those who want more of being one with nature: a visit to Alvor Boardwalk. With a stretch of about three kilometers, this boardwalk leads you on a journey through the best of Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve, revealing close-up, unique views of the surrounding wetlands, wildlife, and beauty. The boardwalk is a favored birdwatching site; here, you might encounter several species of migratory birds that travel to call the nature reserve home.

And, along the route, are various raised viewpoints that provide beautiful-looking vistas towards the river, the estuary, and beyond. In fact, at the end of the boardwalk, a small green-and-white lighthouse serves as the last point and bouy for beautiful views of Alvor and Lagos. There are also places along the way where visitors can refresh themselves with drinks and snacks in cafes and restaurants.

Wandering around Alvor Town

Alvor is itself a fishing village that still remembers its heritage. And though the place was dramatically transformed into a tourist hotspot, it is still very alive and charming. The narrow streets, the quaint whitewashed houses house, and the colorful fishing boats make Alvor a charming town for exploring.

Take time, anyway, to stroll into its church, then visit that historical landmark-cum-tourist attraction-the castle of Alvor. Here, in summer, the town comes alive as the cobbled streets teem with life through the bar, restaurant, and shop offerings. Seafood lovers and wine enthusiasts will be well-catered for at Alvor.

Nearby Beaches and Cliffs

Further east of Praia de Alvor lies Praia dos Três Irmãos, another of those wonderful beaches with beautiful high cliffs kissed by clean waters. These two beaches are actually one beach because of a chain of rocky formations that connects them. Such rocky formations would also give mountains surrounding Praia dos Três Irmãos ideal scenic views over the coastline. They would easily suffice for a short hike if the area is more on your exploring list.

Or walking along the cliffs toward Praia de João de Arens to take that breathtaking view of the coastline. The cliffs boast some of the finest views in the Algarve, with the panorama opening up majestically over the sea and the rugged periphery of shoreline.

Accommodation and Dining

There are many options available for accommodation around Praia de Alvor to fit all budgets and wishes. For a bit more luxurious indulgence, you can spend a few days at the Pestana D. João II Beach & Golf Resort, an elegant 4-star hotel just a short distance from the beach.

The hotel bears different services, including swimming pools and a garden, as well as a buffet restaurant, offering Portuguese and international cuisine.

The self-catering apartment option is another excellent place for independent travelers with Apartamento Praia do Alvor, which has good value-for-money, well-furnished apartments. Another good option is Carvoerio rentals, which is an all-apartment villa perfectly positioned near Carvoerio town.

There are also several fantastic restaurants in the vicinity. Dunas Beach Restaurant is known for its excellent food, and while it is quite costly, the location is great-right on the beach. 5 Quinas and Restinga Ria are also great places for more casual dining with fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese fare.

How to Reach Praia de Alvor

As with any of the nearby cities like Portimão and Lagos, Praia de Alvor provides easy access to it for a day or weekend getaway. The easiest means of getting to Alvor is by car as it is only 50 50-minute drive from Faro Airport. If you don’t have a car, you can take a bus that connects Alvor with Lagos and Portimão, then walk a short distance between the town center and the beach.
